Many homes in New Zealand waste energy. They are badly designed and constructed, have inadequate insulation, and use a lot of energy to heat and run. There are, however, many things you can do to make your home warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Retrofit

To really make your home warmer, drier and healthier to live in, it is important to think about how insulation, heating and ventilation work together as a system. Identifying and fixing any dampness issues is vital for these three elements to work together.

By thinking of each element as one part of the whole puzzle, it's easier to see how getting each part sorted contributes to a more comfortable and healthy living environment.

Insulation

Many older homes in New Zealand are insufficiently insulated. This can make  Homes built prior 1978 typically have no insulation, while those built between 1978 and 2000 will have less than 100mm. EECA standards in New Zealand currently require a minimum of 120mm.

Homeseal Insulation is a registered provider under the Warm Up New Zealand: Heat Smart program. This means that if your home was built before 2000 then you are eligible for an Energywise insulation grant of up to $1300 including GST (other grants are available to community services card holders).

Heating

Heating and cooling accounts for almost 35% of all the energy a typical New Zealand home consumes. Despite this, the majority of our homes are under-heated by international standards.

There are lots of heating options for homes, but using the right kind of energy efficient heater for your circumstances will mean that you can keep your home warm, healthy and comfortable to live in while keeping running costs low. An energy efficient heating system can also help our environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

Efficient heating means more than just having a good heater. It's also about having a well insulated house and using your heaters wisely.

Keeping your home warm is important for your health and comfort, and a good heating system (coupled with proper insulation) makes it much easier to do.

The World Health Organisation recommends the following minimum indoor temperatures, which are also supported by the Ministry of Health.

• A minimum of 18 ˚C, or a minimum of 20 ˚C for more vulnerable groups like children, the elderly and people who are ill.
• A minimum of 16 ˚C in your bedroom overnight.

These recommended temperatures apply to all rooms while you are using them.

New Homes and Renovations

Whether you are building your dream home or a home for just now, how to insulate it is an important decision. With a new home you can determine how energy efficient your new home can be and the future power consumption of your house.

Under the Building Code, new homes and additions to existing homes must be insulated to a minimum standard. If you can, it's well worthwhile spending a little extra and exceeding the requirements to ensure your home is as warm and comfortable as it can be (with the added bonus of lower power bills).

Typically a standard new home will have R2.2 insulation in the walls and R3.2 insulation in the ceiling. By increasing the R value of both the walls and ceiling you make your home more energy efficient and make your home warmer, dryer and healthier. This may cost a little more but the investment will be returned over a few years on power savings.
